Understanding the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Three years after its national launch, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has become one of the most important mental health resources available to Brevard County residents — yet many people still aren't sure what it does or who it's for.
988 is a free, confidential, 24/7 hotline for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, or emotional distress. Callers are connected to trained crisis counselors, and in many areas the line can help coordinate a mobile crisis response instead of dispatching law enforcement.
You don't need to be "in crisis" to call. Family members, friends, and caregivers can also reach out for guidance on how to support someone who is struggling. Both calls and texts are answered, and services are available in multiple languages.
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call or text 988. For non-emergency health and human services across Brevard, 2-1-1 remains the local referral line.
